Employment Security has named September as Paid Family & Medical Leave Month to raise awareness about the employee benefit under development for Washington State.
On January 1, employers will begin collecting wage deductions to finance the benefit that will start on January 1, 2020, when claims will begin to be accepted. Employees will be able to qualify for up to 12 weeks time off with pay for medical and health reasons.
ESD and Governor Inslee are encouraging members of the public to attend rulemaking and information meetings around the state scheduled to shape and explain the program.
The next rulemaking meeting begins at 9 a.m. on Sept. 18 at Employment Security, 640 Woodland Square Loop S.E. in Lacey. ESD also plans one-hour public forums about the law in Wenatchee, Vancouver, Bellingham and Yakima later this month and early in October.
